The Roots finish gives Poul M. Volther's J46 chair a quietly earthy painted surface. Its slender spindle back and compact seating proportions remain wonderfully useful for a breakfast room or dining area where chairs need to move easily around the table. Rather than altering the historic 1956 form, the finish shifts its mood toward warmer, more grounded interiors. The chair remains an individual sale unit with its own fixed color.

“I find these in-between colors particularly successful in rooms where wood, plaster and linen already have subtle variations. The Roots J46 would connect them without insisting on a perfect match. A group of such chairs feels harmonious precisely because the finish is not overly polished.”
-Mrs. Mayfair
